Health Action Plans as a Path to Healthier Housing: Volunteers of America National Services’ Paloma Garden Case Study

As more developers seek to build communities that improve health and wellness by addressing the social determinants of health, it is appropriate to consider integration of public health assessment methods in the development process. However, traditional methods can be overwhelming to affordable housing developers. 

In response to this need and challenge, Enterprise Green Communities includes a Health Action Plan process that is designed specifically for affordable housing developers. Recently, SAHF member, Volunteers of America National Services (VOANS) successfully utilized the Health Action Plan process to prioritize and select the cost-effective design features and strategies that will drive health and well-being for residents at Paloma Garden, an affordable housing senior property in Colorado Springs
