Battery Storage for Backup Power in Affordable Multifamily Housing

The affordable multifamily housing sector is a leader in adopting new clean energy technologies, and that includes battery energy storage systems. State and local building and fire codes may not always address new technologies, making the path to adoption unclear for affordable housing developers and owners. In Maryland, however, proactive code adoption by state officials provided developers regulatory certainty to the adoption of battery energy storage systems for multifamily housing.

This case study highlights the process by which The NHP Foundation complied with code and installed a battery energy storage system in The Terraces at Park Heights, a new construction property in Baltimore, Maryland. The case study also demonstrates how The NHP Foundation was able to reduce both development costs and operating expenses by installing a battery energy storage system for backup power rather than a traditional natural gas generator.
