Portfolio-Level Resources for Multifamily Housing Owners

We have an urgent and historic opportunity to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the multifamily affordable rental housing stock comprised of nearly 5 million homes. While decarbonization efforts must happen at the individual property level, multifamily portfolio owners need to establish portfolio-wide goals and strategies to prioritize their efforts.

SAHF Multifamily Portfolio Carbon Emissions Roadmap

The Multifamily Portfolio Carbon Emissions Roadmap Tool ("the Carbon Roadmap") is a free tool designed for the multifamily sector. It allows national multifamily portfolio owners to use the results from the SAHF Multifamily Portfolio Carbon Emissions Calculator ("the Calculator") to set portfolio targets for decarbonization, and then develop a list of prioritized portfolio segments and decarbonization strategies.

The Roadmap will give owners confidence in committing to time-bound measurable goals, such as those set by the Department of Energy’s Better Climate Challenge, where partners voluntarily commit to reducing carbon emissions by 50% over the next ten years.

SAHF Multifamily Portfolio Carbon Emissions Calculator

To address this fundamental need, Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future created the SAHF Multifamily Portfolio Carbon Emissions Calculator to allow portfolio owners to calculate their annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in CO2 equivalent (“carbon emissions”). With this calculator, SAHF hopes to equip partners and other multifamily portfolio owners with the necessary tools to make decisions informed by their carbon emissions baseline as they strive towards a low-carbon future.

SAHF Roadmap to 20% Energy Savings

When the DOE Better Buildings Challenge (BBC) launched, SAHF lead the development of a quantitative energy efficiency and water conservation tool, the SAHF Roadmap to 20% Energy Savings. This spreadsheet workbook supports multifamily portfolio owners in developing a strategy for reaching energy or water reduction targets, sort through different efficiency options, and make informed choices that demonstrate to decision-makers a concrete path to success.
