GirlTrek is a national non-profit that mobilizes women, especially African American women, to live their healthiest, most fulfilled lives through a habit of daily walking.
GirlTrek uses grassroots organizing and award-winning social media campaigns to support thousands of walkers and trek leaders, while inspiring an ever-growing network of 200,000 supporters through social media.
SAHF and its members, including Mercy Housing, The Community Builders and NHP Foundation have joined this movement, participating in a pilot to support women and girls in affordable rental communities to develop leadership and social capital, improve their health and reclaim the safety of their neighborhoods.
The partnership between GirlTrek and affordable housing organizations is the first of its kind and builds on the success of organizing women and girls through churches, sororities, social organizations and local institutions across the country. Through this partnership, SAHF and its members are learning how rental home communities can be an effective platform for community and resident engagement, and look forward to scaling the value of this partnership for other non profit housing providers, housing authorities and for profit affordable housing providers.
